  1.                 THE MODERN LITTLE RED HEN

  3.   Once upon a time, there was a little red hen who scratched about the
  4. barnyard until she uncovered some grains of wheat. She called her
  5. neighbors and said, "If we plant this wheat, we shall have bread to eat.
  6. Who will help me plant it?"
  7.   "Not I," said the cow.
  8.   "Not I," said the duck.
  9.   "Not I," said the pig.
  10.   "Not I," said the goose.
  11.   "Then I will," said the little red hen. And she did. The wheat grew
  12. tall and ripened into golden grain. "Who will help me reap my wheat?"
  13. asked the little red hen.
  14.   "Not I," said the duck.
  15.   "Out of my classification," said the pig.
  16.   "I'd lose my seniority," said the cow.
  17.   "I'd lose my unemployment compensation," said the goose.
  18.   "Then I will," said the little red hen, and she did.
  19.   At last it came time to bake the bread. "Who will help me bake the
  20. bread?" asked the little red hen.
  21.   "That would be overtime for me," said the cow.
  22.   "I'd lose my welfare benefits," said the duck.
  23.   "I'm a dropout and never learned how," said the pig.
  24.   "If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination," said the goose.
  25.   "Then I will," said the little red hen.
  26.   She baked five loaves and held them up for her neighbors to see.
  27.   They wanted some and, in fact, demanded a share. But the little red
  28. hen said, "No, I can eat the five loaves."
  29.   "Excess profits!" cried the cow.
  30.   "Capitalist leech!" screamed the duck.
  31.   "I demand equal rights!" yelled the goose.
  32.   And the pig just grunted. And they painted "unfair" picket signs and
  33. marched around and around the little red hen, shouting obscenities.
  34.   When the government agent came, he said to the little red hen, "You
  35. must not be greedy."
  36.   "But I earned the bread," said the little red hen.
  37.   "Exactly," said the agent. "That is the wonderful free enterprise
  38. system. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants. But under
  39. our modern government regulations, the productive workers must
  40. divide their product with the idle."
  41.   And they lived happily ever after, including the little red hen, who
  42. smiled and clucked, "I am grateful. I am grateful."
  43.   But her neighbors wondered why she never again baked any more bread.
